Yep, your kids probably would never believe you if you told them things could be fun and educational! I know my kids can't believe it when we are having fun and I tell them we are learning too. It's wonderful yet oh so sad at the same time. Since when did learning something have to be boring? I'm an eternal student of oh so many things, I could never imagine a day in my life if I wasn't learning something new.
OK, so onto my share. I know you are just dying to know! I volunteer weekly in Annika's classroom and I usually am there around the time when they do literacy stations. My job was to hang with the "silly sentence" group. I just thought these were brilliant! The kids got a huge kick out of making long (grammatically correct) run on sentences that were beyond silly.
I picked up Silly Sentences yesterday at Lakeshore Learning Store for less than $10. So far Bianca and Annika have come up with some doozies. The best part is Annika knows how to use them so she is teaching Bianca.
The set comes with sentence starters such as "the" and "a", a variety of adjectives and verbs, some adverbs and plenty of different nouns such as house, frog, caterpillar, etc. It even comes with different punctuation marks to complete your sentence. Oh, and the best part, some of the the's and a's are capitalized so that they know to capitalize the beginning word of a sentence. Wonderful!
Lastly, these pieces are formed like puzzle pieces so the child will know if the sentence is incorrect because they won't fit together properly. For example, putting "the a jumped clock" together wouldn't work because it's not grammatically correct. Of course Bennett doesn't care, but he's still young!
So, head out and pick up this fun and educational game!

I haven't seen this game but I do something very similar with my first graders but they have to write the sentences. First graders hate to write so this would be even better!
